Shar replied: "I don't know enough about the hormonal therapy used for male to female transfer but Premarin is a female synthetic hormone made from mare urine. It's been around a long time and has been used for female hormone replacement therapy. I would suspect that it will decrease the testosterone that you produce causing you to develop more breast tissue, reduce the male hair growth and add some female curvature to your body. It will also probably cause you to be more emotionally sensative. Good luck on your therapy. I'm sure if you did some research online, you would be able to find more information."

I am 16 years old and my mom just had a Hysterectomy and is now on the hormone called "Premarin".? I am 16 years old and my mom just had a Hysterectomy and is now on the hormone called "Premarin". Naloki replied: "Premarin is a replacement for the estrogen that is no longer being supplied by ovaries. There are lots of arguments about the effects of Hormone Replacement Therapies both pro and con. It is a decision that has to be made by each woman and using correct information-not just word of mouth info without any evidence. I elected to go on HRT after a hysterectomy and removal of both ovaries because I have a very bad family history of heart disease. HRT has been shown to lower the risk of cardiovascular problems. I also don't want to deal with osteoporosis and the fractures that are common with this condition. My mom has been on Premerin since 1976 and she is 81 years old and looks 62 or 68. She's never missed a dose and is doing great. No one in her family has lasted to their 88's and I believe the HRT has a bit to do with it. My concern with Premarin is the way it is produced. It is made by using horses and I just have a personal problem with the way it is done especially since there are so many synthetic substances but that is also a personal thing. Hope this helps."

CDRN replied: "She's on that because they also took out her ovaries and she does need hormone replacement until she is of age to start menopause. Its just controversial when you are in your 50's and 60's that it can cause problems......."

beadingbusily replied: "I took it briefly after my hysterectomy and it didn't hellp me at all, but everyone is different. Your mom needs to take it easy. A hysterectomy is major surgery. While it can help some women feel better, I think that it has been linked to breast cancer."

Violettaa replied: "I had a hysterectomy 10 years ago and started on premarin the same day. I have never had a problem with the medication and will take it for the rest of my life. Your mother will be very glad she had the hysterectomy, I know I have never regreted it."

BettyG replied: "Firstly let me say that Premarin is too widely used by American women. Premarin is the most widely-sold DRUG in the USA today. According to an AARP Modern Maturity Magazine article a while back, 84% of women who enter menopause receive an HRT Rx to solve ALL their problems. The giant pharmaceuticals are laughing all the way their respective banks."

Veleda replied: "Premarin is a brand name for the hormone, estrogen. Your mom probably had both her ovaries and her uterus removed during her hysterectomy. When the ovaries are removed, the hormone estrogen is no longer produced. I amguessing your mom might be in her 40's, and that's a young age to not have any estrogen anymore. estrogen is needed to protect your bones from not losing density by helping keep calcium in. estrogen is also beneficial to the muscle lining of the arteries, thereby protecting your mom's heart. estrogen is a good thing, unless your mom has a history of breast cancer, or anyone in her family. In that case, taking estrogen could increase that risk. Your mom will be followed by annual mamograms, and she should be doing breast self exam monthly, as should you, too. If you are still concerned, call her doctor or nurse practitioner with your questions."

Monserat replied: "Hi, I have been on Premarin for not quite six months now. I'm 47. Like my mother and my sister I had a very early menopause and stopped having my periods approx. 6 years ago. I have been VERY happy with Premarin. I sleep better and do not have those awful hot flashes. I did have some problems at first with water retention, but that has gone away. I have noticed since talking Premarin that my hair and skin has come to be in better condition. I would attribute that to the re-introduction of estrogen. It also helped my sex drive to return. Before going on Premarin I tried the so-called natural hormone replacement with mixed results. It did alleviate some of my symptoms, but controlling dosage was very hard. My best wishes to your mom. I am happy for her that she has a daughter so interested in her wellbeing."

edkusxv replied: "CONJUGATED ESTROGENS (Premarin®, Cenestin™) contains a mixture of estrogen hormones. Estrogens are essential for maintaining normal female functions. Conjugated estrogens can help relieve symptoms of the menopause (hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, and vaginal dryness and irritation), and also help to prevent osteoporosis (thin weak bones). Conjugated estrogens can also help improve female functions in women with hormonal imbalance or problems with their ovaries. Cheap premarin"

can anyone tell me about the female hormone premarin? i am a male to female transgender. i just started taking premarin 0.625. i was wondering does anyone know what the affects on my body and mind would be in stages and long does it take to start showing these affects? thanks

be happier own a pitbull replied: "Premarin = estrogen/hormone replacement. Premarin is the drug name. Is should help form more feminine features etc. It is possible it can make you moody dizziness, light headedness, headache, stomach upset, bloating, nausea, weight changes, increased/decreased interest in sex, or breast tenderness. As far as how long does it take well as you are well aware trans-gender is a slow process. So, it really depends on your body and how well it reacts to the drug."

Diane replied: "Don't expect miracles; unless you're a young teenager, the effects of oestrogen therapy will be neither spectacular nor fast. There's a very good information page about hormones, their effects and dosages here; I would say, though, that many transsexual women (and other women too) prefer not to use Premarin; not only because of it's side effects, but because they find the method of production distasteful. There are better alternatives."

What kinds of hormone replacement therapy is there other than Premarin? I just can no longer take it now that I have learned how they get it I want something that is not taken from animals under torturous conditions

pinkhopper2003 replied: "I don't know if your in the States, but in Canada we have wonder herbal alturnatives to the pharmasutical companies pills. I would suggest that you pull out the phone book and look for your local health food store that can sit with you and give you a free consultation. Good luck!!!"

Torik replied: "There are other oestrogens avaiable that aren't from equine sources. See your doctor as you'll need a script. In Australia some of the brands are Estrofem & Progynova; these contain oestradiol instead of the conjugated equine oestrogens."

Kat S replied: "There are natural, "bio-identicals" - natural hormones that exactly match our hormone receptor sites (unlike urine from pregnant mares!!) - not surprisingly, they are called BHRTs (Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy). They are around, but you'll need to do some checking around in your area for drs. familiar with these therapies."

A Healthier You replied: "PLEASE stay away from the cancer-causing synthetic hormones!! They are killing women! Have you had a saliva hormone assay done? This is the only sure way to know what your hormone levels are. The level of only one hormone means nothing - you need to know the relationship of levels of all you hormones. There are very few women who actually need estrogen replacement. Chances are, you need progesterone instead. I have been taking a natural progesterone cream, and I feel better now than I did in my 20's!"

has anyone ever taken the hormone premarin?if so any side effects? i just started taking these hormones due to polycystic ovary syndrome...and i would like to get some feedback for the drug

shewolf replied: "Well, it was the only one I could take without side effects. I even tried the patch, what a mistake!!! Go to, I believe there are chat rooms just for this sort of thing, and most of the people there truely care. If anyone could give you advice, they could."

Mod M replied: "Premarin is made from PREgnant MARes urINe. They keep these horses pinned up with little or no water and kill their foals...other options that are manmade are available and your doctor KNOWS what they are..."

shai replied: "hi hun its too much to explain here, i found his link which goes into detail for you, goodluk "

On hormone replacement (premarin) and feeling sick? I've been taking Premarin for a couple of weeks due to premature ovarian failure and low estrogen levels. It doesn't serve as birth control and I changed to HRT for the slim chance to get pregnant while waiting to do IVF. Anyway I was fine the first week or so but the last two days I've been feeling sick to my stomach and dizzy sometimes. Is this normal?? Any suggestions?? Thanks!! I've taken birth control before and it never made me sick and I've read that birth control is stronger then what I'm taking...thus I'm wondering what's going on.

Help replied: "when did you start takin hrt. if it recently then your body is adjusting to it. my gf was on the pill b4 hrt and she was fine. she could handle hrt so she started the pill again.hope this helps. in btwn thanks for tyour help."

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy? What kind of doctor do I see to start this kind of therapy? Im taking the hormone premarin and want to see about starting this kind of therapy. Thanks I'm 46 and have had a total hysterectomey 2 years ago.

Nutritionally Fortified replied: "Your regular family physician. There is no menopause specialist and while you still need pap smears once a year you'll be in contact with your family medicine doctor more often. They will also be aware of all your other medical problems and medications."

How did the drug Premarin come about ? I am doing a research assignment on Premarin and am struggling to find any information on how it came about . I have found that scientists first discovered that they could extract estrogens from the urine of pregnant women back in the 1920's (for therapeutics). They then found that women and horse (mare) urine was very similar so started to extract estrogens from mare urine instead . Does anybody have any more information about the origins of this drug or any hormone replacement therapy relating to Premarin ? Thanks

Aine replied: "Yes, the word Premarin comes from "Pregnant mares urine". now it is synthetically made."

Hormone replacement therapy and feeling sick? I am 27 and I have premature ovarian failure and started taking hormone replacement (premarin) a couple weeks ago because of low estrogen levels. I was feeling okay on it at first but the last few days I've felt sick to my stomach and dizzy. What do people feel like on this?? Is this normal?? Thanks!!

jrme33 replied: "quite normal it will gert better. i wish i could get more hormones iam male and want to take moe hormones my breasts were starting to grow an i loved that"

Kelly M replied: "I have never taken premarin, but you need to see what the side-affects are. It may be that you cannot take it. It does take awhile for your estrogen levels to build back up, and that maybe why you are now just getting sick and stuff. I would talk with your doctor about your concerns. I take Estratest. which comes in full strength (dark green pill) half strength (light green pill) and never had a problem. I have been taking it for 7 yrs now. I had to have a hysterectomy in 99 and the ovaries where removed in 01. I was 29 when I had the hysterectomy"
